It’s Monday afternoon, I’m home and rested when my phone rings. Cheryl from the agency says she has someone perfect for the nanny position. She’s sending her over today and emailing her resume. I’m not wasting my time reading one more resume, but hope the person she’s raving about is all that she’s cracked up to be. Plus, it would be nice if Sadie had a few days to train her replacement and facilitate a seamless transition before she leaves.

We’ve just finished with lunch when the guard house calls. Sadie answers and agrees to let in whoever it is. Within minutes the doorbell chimes, Kaarina bolts to the door with Sadie.

I hear excited voices conversing like old friends. As I make my way to the foyer to see what is going on, I hear, “So, you’re Ms. Petersen?”

Nothing could prepare me for the shock of seeing Bella…holding Kaarina.

“Dada, Bella,” my daughter says.

Bella stands in front of me, the quintessential girl next door, the one I want as my friend and my lover. Her long dark hair covers her shoulders in slight waves. The only makeup she’s wearing is lip gloss and my eyes are drawn to her mouth, a mouth I want to—

“See, I told you it would work out,” Sadie interrupts my thoughts and excuses herself with a twinkle in her eye.

As soon as Sadie is out of earshot, I ask, “What are you doing here?” not knowing she’s here for the job. Cheryl never mentioned the name Bella and I didn’t bother to read her email. Clearly not my finest moment, but my brain stopped working the minute I laid eyes on her.

“I thought I was here for the nanny job,” she gives me a half smile and shrugs her shoulders. She tickles Kaarina’s tiny tummy and nuzzles her face, starting a fit of giggles.

“What? How? I thought you were in school.”

“I am, but mostly online. I was told to ask for Ms Petersen and had no idea the job is working for you,” she adds. I assume it’s to reassure me she’s not stalking me.

“I use Sadie’s last name to weed out anyone with ulterior motives. I want you as a nanny, but we’ve been involved. It’s a conflict in my opinion. My reputation could have an impact on my contract with the team.” I explain. “Not to mention my ex-wife who will use anything to open up a custody fight.”

I’m elated to see her, but as a father, I have to look at the situation from all the angles. And therein lies the travesty of the situation. I’m damned if I hire her and I’m damned if I don’t. Helena will pitch a fit over a nanny who isn’t up to her standards of qualifications, and I can’t live without one.

“I understand,” she nods letting out a long sigh as we move into the living room and sit. I search her rounded face and detect disappointment in her eyes. “I need the job after a co-worker saw me get in your car and ratted me out to Jeff.
